What is a Challenge?
Challenges add some extra excitement -- you get a new mission, and a chance to win rewards!
You have 24 hours from the moment you open the challenge to find all the eggs within the challenge collection. Premium members get three new Challenge Keys a day, and non-Premium members get one free Challenge Key per day. If you successfully complete a challenge within 24 hours, you win bonus shells.
How do I start a challenge?
You can start opening challenges at level 8 -- that's when you'll receive your first Challenge Key in the Challenges section at the bottom right of your play screen.
Click on the red exclamation point or green plus sign to open a new challenge right away.
You’ll see options for daily (free) challenges, loaded challenges, or Megga challenge. If you’ve already opened a daily challenge, a timer will appear showing how long until your next daily challenge is available.
Clicking the green Challenges icon opens a window showing all your keys. Click a key to open a challenge of that type.
Need more challenge keys? You can buy Loaded and Megga Keys in the Marketplace with shells.
When you open a challenge, a circle for it will appear between in front of your basket, showing how many challenge eggs you've found and how much time remains in your challenge. The circle's color indicates the difficulty level. Clicking on the circle brings up a view of what eggs are in your challenge, which you've found, and which you still need.
How do I complete a challenge?
When you see a green checkmark for your challenge, click there to bring up the challenge details and mark it complete. A challenge is not officially complete until you click Complete Challenge!
Once you click that button, you will receive your challenge rewards.
What are the rewards for completing a challenge?
When you complete a challenge, you get bonus shells. You may also get other rewards during special events.
Challenge rewards can range anywhere from 1 to 1000 shells, depending on several factors: challenge difficulty, amount of wager (if any), whether eggs were purchased to complete the challenge, and whether or not it is the first free challenge of the day (measured from midnight GMT).
Free Challenge Keys (daily and Premium) have lower payouts than loaded challenge keys. The first free challenge you complete in a given day (GMT) is eligible for a reward higher than one shell; any other free challenges will only be rewarded one shell, irrespective of the difficulty level you selected.
If you want to increase your chances for greater rewards, you have a few options:
- Purchasing a Loaded Challenge Key (higher rewards than free keys, as explained above)
- Buying eggs for your challenge (applies to purchased and free keys)
- Placing a wager (applies to purchased and free keys)
How can I review open challenges?
From the main gameplay screen, you can click on individual challenges at the bottom of your screen and the green Challenges icon. You should also know about our filters! Click on the funnel icon in the top right corner of the Challenges window to show options for sorting and filtering by difficulty, expiration, key type, etc.:

What is a loaded Challenge Key?

A Challenge Key that you purchase is "loaded"—meaning, you are likely to see greater rewards than a daily (free) challenge key, even if it's not your first challenge of the day. Hatchlings also gives these out as event prizes from time to time. While Loaded Challenge Keys tend to pay out more than free Daily keys, there is no guaranteed minimum payout on loaded keys. |
What are Megga Keys?

Each Megga Key opens 5 normal (loaded) challenges at once. Using one does not use up loaded Challenge Keys that are already in your inventory. Want to save time opening a ton of challenges? Purchase Megga Keys in the Hatchlings Marketplace. To use a Megga Key, click on the Challenges icon like you would to open any other challenge. Choose your preferred challenge difficulty to finish opening the Megga challenge. All 5 challenges will be opened at the selected difficulty. Also, Megga Keys wear bows. |
How do I purchase a Challenge key?

You can purchase a Loaded or Megga Challenge Key at anytime in the Marketplace. You can get there from the Challenges window or by clicking on the cart icon. |

What's up with Challenge Key Subscriptions?
You can purchase seven- and 31-day subscriptions from the Hatchlings Marketplace to receive two Loaded Challenge Keys a day (in addition to the free daily/Premium keys you receive).
The first day of your subscription, we'll automatically add two Loaded Challenge Keys to your inventory, but after that, you need to open the Challenges screen to claim your keys each day.
Clicking on the green Challenges circle at the bottom of your screen brings up a window with keys and a gold Subscription medallion. Click on Subscription to claim the keys, then start a challenge as usual.
Even though it gives you keys on a daily basis, your subscription is buying LOADED Challenge Keys, so that’s the number you'll see increase by two.
One thing to know: Challenge Key subscriptions start when you buy them, rather than after any current key subscriptions, meaning you could “lose” keys if you renew early. If this happens to you, contact Support.
What is a Challenge Wager?
Every time you begin a new challenge, you'll be presented with an opportunity to wager shells. It's totally optional! After you open your challenge and choose the difficulty, then you can choose a wager amount (50, 100, 250, or 500 shells). Those shells will be removed from your balance as soon as you place the wager.
If you select a wager for a Megga challenge key, that wager will be placed on each of the five challenges opened by that key, so five times (5x) that number of shells will be removed from your balance when you click Start.
Wagering is a lot like gambling: there is no guarantee that you will win shells or that you will even win your initial shell wager back, but you can make wagering work in your favor by purchasing eggs as you complete the challenge or else increasing the difficulty of your challenge. Keep in mind—the greater the risk, the greater the payout!
Help! I got an Uber in my challenge!
Challenge eggs are randomly pulled from every series that you have open, so it is possible to get an Uber, special event, or other very hard-to-find eggs. If you have one in your storage, great! You’ll be able to complete the challenge. The Hatchlings community is also very generous, so feel free to ask for help in your Network or in Global Chat for help with these elusive eggs.
